Our read
Zero Bayern minutes last season, and 2,198 in the Premier League with 24 starts on loan at Tottenham. Both of those are true at the same time, and the gap between them says more about the shape of this squad than about him. At 31, with a contract to 2028 and Kimmich and Pavlović ahead of him, the route back is narrow and the club knows it.

Newcastle United have identified João Palhinha as an option in their search for an experienced midfielder to fill the void left by Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali. Aston Villa are also interested in Palhinha, as he looks set to return to the Premier League this summer

Damián Vidagany (Aston Villa's director of football) confirms the interest in João Palhinha: "We need a midfielder because Amadou Onana will be out for the entire season, and João Palhinha is a very good player who would fit our plans. We are in talks, but there's currently no agreement. If anything does happen, it will always be on the basis of the big respect we have for FC Bayern. Our clubs are friends, and our relationship with Max Eberl, Christoph Freund and all the other people in charge is excellent. That is why I cannot and do not want to comment on any further details."

Aston Villa are still showing strong interest in João Palhinha. The clubs have so far been unable to reach an agreement over the terms of a transfer. Bayern are demanding around €25m, deemed too much by Villa. Friday's friendly between the two teams will offer them a chance to negotiate face to face. Even though Palhinha said that he wanted to fight for his place at Bayern, his entourage is still listening to offers. If he sees no prospect of fair treatment and sporting competition at Bayern, Palhinha would be willing to leave, provided he receives a convincing offer
